Representing The World's Finest Tapestries

This unique selection of tapestry designs has been collected from around the world. You may recognize many of the Masters on this web site, as these are beautiful reproductions on canvas from European and American museums.

The History of Tapestries

The tapestry is an ancient art. In Greek mythology, Penelope awaited her husband Ulysses while weaving tapestries. Since the XVI century, the gentry loved to have historic or religious scenes woven by the great c raftsmen of their time. The tapestries were not only decorative, but played a practical role in covering the walls of huge drafty castles. Medieval cartoon-painters and weavers produced the very same masterpieces that are shown on our web site.

Recently a renaissance in the art of tapestry-making has taken place in America. A strong public desire has grown for something that would lend an esthetic quality to modern functional living. The tapestry is a sumptuous decoration, a way of taking one's dream with one. It enlarges the dwelling by its infinity - it can bring into the home nature and legend.

We offer an exciting collection that can be enjoyed by everyone. Tapestry kits contain the canvas printed in full colour, yarn, needle, and instructions. The 100% cotton canvas is a double weave antique or white canvas called Old Penelope or White Penelope. The yarn is 100% pure wool from France. The kits may be stitched in either half-cross or tent stitch. There is something for every setting and for every level of skill.

We do hope you will find exactly what you are looking for, perhaps even a complete departure from what you had in mind. Our vast resources consisting of thousands of other designs and sizes are available individually by request. Whatever you choose, we hope to hear from you and wish you many hours of delightful pleasure!

Our goal is to provide you with the best quality in hand craft products and customer service. We appreciate your comments and suggestions as they are the building blocks of our business.

"A Mon Seul Desir"

"To my sole desire" from the series of "The Lady and the Unicorn" is a XV century tapestry from the Cluny Museum in Paris, famous for its charm, elegance and grace. It was originally offered as an engagement present to Claude de Vista by Jean de Chabanne in 1512. The lion and the Unicorn are emblems of strength and purity, symbolizing the fiancee's union.
